Don Helowʻs background as an owner of real estate in Hawaii, California and Florida, along with his business acumen and experience as instructor of Speech Communications, laid the foundation for a successful real estate career. Now co-owner and broker-in-charge of Hawaii Sunset Real Estate LLC, Don thrives on meeting the goals of his clients by providing sound advice to real estate investors, creatively marketing properties, or assisting a client to search for the perfect property in paradise.Always the waterman and athlete, Don was drawn to Hawaii in the early days by the sand and surf, where he began teaching Speech Communications at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 1977 and then at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1980 to 1987. Don and his family invested in several Oahu properties, which he renovated and managed.A business opportunity took him back to his home state of Florida in 1987. Don sold the business in 1997 and moved west to Marin County, a short drive over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. At a wedding in Maui, Don met the owner of an office supply company based in Marin. For the next ten years, Don acquired office supply accounts from San Francisco to Novato.  He found extremely satisfying the challenge of making a “cold call” at a company, and then, through good service and gaining trust, eventually new business.

Don met Beth, his wife, in San Francisco. They were married in 2001 in Kona, Hawaii, not realizing at the time that they would eventually be living full time in Kona. Missing the tropics, Don began in 2005, to fly back and forth to Kona, building a real estate business . He retired the office supply business in 2012.

Don met Nancie Martens, R, his business partner, in 2005. In 2009 they formed Hawaii Sunset Real Estate, LLC. He enjoys working in the current market because he knows he can find opportunities for his clients, he enjoys running the numbers and examining market trends, to help clients make wise decisions. “I will always explain the pros and cons of any potential property to our clients.” Don believes his long-time connection with the Hawaiian Islands and his personal experiences as a real estate investor, greatly benefits his clients, buyers and sellers alike.

For fun and adventure, Don and Beth self-book their travels, embracing the real flavor of the host cultures. In September and October 2012, they spent three weeks exploring Myanmar (Burma). Prior adventures to SE Asia found them in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. In September 2013, they visited ten cities in three countries beginning with three days in Bangkok, Thailand, then on to Hua Hin, the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Samui, Phuket and Phi Phi. Continuing to Malaysia, they visited Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, concluding with Brunei and Singapore. In August 2014, they visited Paris; in October. May of 2015 found Don & Beth back in Shanghai for a wedding.

Don enjoy tennis, scuba, stand up paddle, steering both 6 and 12 man outriggers for Keauhou Outrigger Club, yoga and swimming in the ocean; and most of all, calling Hawaii “there home”!
